our training focus

Retreat Theme

Throughout this retreat, we will focus on the teaching of isshokenmei 一生懸命, a Japanese phrase meaning to do something with complete dedication. We will explore the experience of isshokenmei ni ganbaru, persevering with full commitment – body, mind, and spirit.


This was the focus Motomichi Anno Sensei chose for this year before his passing at the end of January.

The retreat is held at the Civic Auditorium, conveniently located in downtown Santa Cruz with nearby restaurants, beaches, and redwood forests.

Natural Bridges Beach: the final morning of the retreat will begin along the sea, embracing the invigorating energy of nature with bokken (wooden sword) training, paired keiko, and traditional shin kokyu practice on the sandy shoreline. Directions →
