FAQ + Tips to ensure a great training experience

Training every day is encouraged, and there are many ways to do it – you choose. You can train as much or as little as you wish during Kangeiko week. Everyone is welcome!
Make a 7-Day Training Goal (optional)
To formally complete 7 days of Kangeiko 2021 and receive your Calligraphy here are the requirements:
Do a minimum of 30 minutes of formal Aikido training each day, Jan. 24-30. This may be actual classes (Online or Outdoors), or personal training you do On-Your-Own.
Attend ASC classes a minimum of 3 days (or 3 classes) during the week. More is encouraged!
Complete a “Kangeiko 7-Day Training Record” and submit it to ASC (more info coming soon)
There are special ASC Kangeiko Classes available each morning, and other daytime and evening classes; as well as Community Share times and Conversations with Instructors. Please look at the Kangeiko class schedule, and attend as much as you can!
On-Your-Own training options
(a minimum of 30 minutes of formal practice each day):
Solo Aikido weapons practice (bokken, jo, bo)
Aikido weapons practice with a partner, in a Covid-safe way
Solo Aikido movement practice
Aikido movement or technique practice with a Covid-safe partner
Misogi practice: Shin Kokyu; Cold-water Misogi
Meditation / Chanting / Breathing practices
Combination of Aikido practices
You can also attend a class at your home Aikido dojo (online, or safely in person)
Note: you must attend at least 3 ASC classes (days) during Kangeiko week. More is awesome, and will help to strengthen the Community!

For those of you in the Santa Cruz area, we’re offering a class at Natural Bridges State Beach. This class will focus on fluidity and flexibility of movement.
Friday • January 29, 2021
12:00 pm - 1:00 pm PST
Instructor: Nico Secunda (3rd Dan • Aikido of Santa Cruz)
Natural Bridges State Beach, Santa Cruz
Meet on the beach at 11:55 am.
This class will be held rain or shine.
Face masks and physical distancing required.
Please bring a wooden training staff (Bo or Jo) if you have one. We will have extra for anyone who wants to borrow a staff.
Come in your gi or any comfortable clothes. Raincoat and warm layers optional : )
To protect each other, maintain 6 ft+ physical distance at all times. Air-hugs only!
Parking Information:
Free street parking available. Parking along Swanton Road has been partially blocked off, so make sure to arrive early to find parking.
$10 parking is available just past the state beach entrance kiosk.

How do I access the online classes?
Click on the “Access Online Event” button link in your registration confirmation email to join each online class using Zoom.
In case you can’t find the email, we can resend your confirmation email.
Tip: Plan to arrive/login 5 minutes early for class, so that everyone is present to start on time.
Do I need to attend every class?
No. Train as much as you want, Kangeiko is about intensifying your own individual practice, whatever that feels like for you.
Note: To receive a calligraphy you must train at least once a day for 7 days, and join a minumum of 3 ASC classes (3 days) during Kangeiko week.
Will online classes be recorded?
No, we won’t be recording online classes, so make sure to join classes you don’t want to miss.
How do I unmute myself?
If called upon by an instructor during a class, please unmute yourself using the Zoom App controls. The “Mute/Unmute” button is usually in the lower left of your window.

How do online classes work?
We’ll be using Zoom to connect with everyone during Kangeiko. This will allow you to see and hear the instructors, while also interacting with other attendees throughout the week. You may already be a Zoom pro, but not to worry if that isn’t the case.

Will there be weapons training?
Yes, for locals, there will be 2 outdoor sword classes (Sunday + Wednesday) and these classes can be attended on Zoom as well.
If possible, please have a Bokken (wooden sword) and Bo or Jo (wooden long/short staff) available to use during all online classes, as instructors may choose to integrate them into the class.
Tip: If you do not have a wooden sword or staff, use a substitute (e.g. broomstick handle or umbrella)
What should I wear?
Please wear your gi (keiko gi / training uniform) during online classes if possible. If you don’t have a gi, no worries, but wear comfortable clothing that is easy to move in.
Note: You do not need to wear your gi for outdoor classes during Kangeiko.
What is Shin Kokyu?
Shin Kokyu or Chinkon Kishin is a misogi (purification practice) that was used and taught by O-Sensei and is often done at the beginning class in some Aikido lineages.

What should I do if have technical issues?
If you have issues during an online class, please use the chat feature to communicate with the support team.
