Zachiah has been an instructor in the ASC Young People’s classes since 2015. They have been sincerely influenced by the deeply open, heart-felt, and expansive teachings of Motomichi Anno Sensei and the wonderful, rich heart-mind of their chief instructor Linda Holiday Sensei. Zachiah’s approach to Aikido and to teaching young people is one of remembering one’s basic goodness, both on the mat and in the world. When external conditions are disappointing or confusing, coming back to one’s basic goodness helps one keep their balance and respond to life rather than react. Aikido is great for kids because it is an opportunity for them to realize their basic goodness and learn to live from the inside out. They learn to respond to an “attack,” an unskillful attempt to connect, by staying soft and close, and not allowing themselves or the other person to get hurt. Zachiah says, “When we remember our basic goodness and connection with all of Life, we naturally practice Ban Yu Ai Go—love and protection for all beings. After graduating, he trained at Aikido of Mountain View for four years, before taking an 18-year break to travel, get married and have a family. Shawn returned to training in 2006 at Aikido of Santa Cruz and received Yondan in 2024. He is inspired by his teachers Linda Holliday Sensei and Glen Kimoto Sensei, as well as other teachers and sempai at Aikido of Santa Cruz. In 1973 at the age of 9 Kayla Sensei fell in love with Aikido and has been dedicated to growing in the art and training continuously for 50 years. For the first 20 years of her practice, she was greatly inspired by training under Morihiro Saito Shihan, who was one of the founder's closest students. In 1980 Kayla Sensei traveled to Iwama, Japan to train with Saito Shihan as an uchi deshi (live-in apprentice). During subsequent trips to study Aikido in Japan, Sensei trained with a number of other Shihan who were close students to the founder, among many: Kisshomaru Ueshiba (O-Sensei's son), Seiichi Sugano, Motomichi Anno, and Kazuo Chiba. Since childhood she has also practiced with and been strongly influenced by Frank Doran Shihan, Robert Nadeau Shihan, and Hiroshi Ikeda Shihan. Kayla Sensei has taught seminars throughout the US, Europe, and Israel. In addition to her Aikido accomplishments she received a Masters degree in Holistic Health Education from JFK University in 1998. She received the rank of 7th dan in 2021. Kayla Sensei recognizes that we all have different bodies, histories, ages and learning styles. She is dedicated to making Aikido accessible for anyone who wants to train at Aikido of Berkeley. Maria was also drawn to Aikido because of the founder of Aikido, Moreihei Ueshiba O Sensei's, commitment to environmentalism and respect for nature and the preservation of life. Maria began her own study of martial arts in 2017 while training intensively in Aikido and self-defense at the University of California, Santa Cruz under Yoshi Shibata Sensei. She continues her practice at Aikido of Santa Cruz under Linda Holiday Sensei, Glen Kimoto Sensei, and Aimen Al Rafai Sensei. Maria is also inspired by and has trained at seminars with Takeshi Yamashima Sensei (8th dan), Mary Heiny Sensei (7th dan), and Doshu Moriteru Ueshiba, the founder of Aikido’s grandson. Maria has experience teaching adults, teens, and children, and served as a teaching assistant for college-level Aikido and self-defense students at UCSC. Since 2021, she has assisted in and taught youth and teen classes at Aikido of Santa Cruz and is dedicated to helping young people improve their lives by increasing their ability to deal with stress and build calmness and confidence through Aikido practice. She is committed to creating an environment of respect, inclusion and kindness for her students. Maria is also a strong supporter of LGBTQIA+ rights and believes strongly that people from all walks of life need to be treated equally. Maria’s teaching philosophy includes, as O Sensei said, to “always practice” and teach Aikido “ in a joyful and vibrant manner”, to incorporate qualities of nature into Aikido including how animals move, how plants grow, how water flows and the movements of celestial objects, and to remember that Aikido is “ban yu ai go,” love and protection for all beings. In addition to Aikido, Maria has a background in non-violent communication and environmental interpretation. She teaches outdoor education classes in ethnobotany and nature awareness. Maria holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Anthropology from UCSC and is committed to raising awareness of Indigenous history and ongoing presence in California and the Americas. She also enjoys hiking, listening to the language of birds, painting, watching Hayao Miyazaki films, vegan cooking and baking and of course practicing Aikido with her children Sky and Zen.
